Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins announced this morning at a press event in New York City that the company plans to bring its free ad-supported streaming service to mobile devices. Currently non-subscribers can only access free full TV episodes on desktop computers or laptops. Hulu also announced plans to launch "the next generation" of the Hulu Plus iPhone app this summer.
According to a Hulu blog post, Hulu Plus has surpassed 6 million subscribers. The ad-supported subscription service costs $7.99 a month for full access to current and back episodes of popular television shows from ABC, Comedy Central, The CW, FOX, NBC, MTV and Univision.
The company also outlined its new advertising strategies which include a partnership with Pizza Hut to roll out its “In-Stream Purchase Unit". The new feature will allow customers to place orders without leaving the "Hulu enviroment". Hulu's Cross Platform and Hulu 360 ads promise to deliver a "groundbreaking viewing experience" across multiple platforms.
Finally, Hulu announced that they have ordered second seasons of four popular Hulu Originals: Deadbeat, The Awesomes, Quick Draw and East Los High.
