According to reports, the PTCRB has tested and certified four new iPhone models for use on GSM operator networks. The four models have four different storage capacities, ranging from 4GB up to 32GB.
If the reports are true, Apple is likely differentiating the four models not only by changing the amount of flash memory. Previous leaks have indicated that Apple plans to offer modified software on each model to allow different levels of functionality based on the hardware and price of each device.
Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner stated that the "iPhone is still in its early days and could gain share by providing more functionality, lowering prices, growing geographically, or segmenting the market with different models". His contention after a meeting with Apple executives was that market segmentation would focus on software.
A leaked photo was also recently circulated alleging that the Fido network in Canada was planning to offer a $99 iPhone with 4GB of storage and iChat video calling.
PTCRB stands for PCS Type Certification Review Board. PCS (Personal Communications Service) is the name for the 1900 MHz radio band used for digital mobile phone services in Canada, Mexico and the United States. The organization was established in 1997 and provides a framework within which mobile phones or communication devices can be certified to work with PTCRB operators' cellular networks. PTCRB operators may block unapproved devices from their network.
