Will my original iPhone (2G) run iPhone OS 4.0?

From Apple CEO Steve Jobs himself, writing email on his iPhone:

"Sorry, no."

If you have an aluminum-backed iPhone, installing the iPhone 4 firmware update will not work. Presumably, the operating system is too advanced for the capabilities of the older hardware. Apple will not release any future updates for the original iPhone. The iPhone 2G is officially obsolete.
