Market research firm Strategy Analytics has declared Apple the wearable device leader in the first quarter of 2017. According to the report, Apple captured 16 percent of the total market for wearables during the first three months of the year. In fact, Apple and Xiaomi bumped Fitbit out of the top slot, representing a significant challenge to the previous market leader.

Fitbit announces new fitness watch called Blaze

Fitbit today unveiled its new fitness watch called "Blaze" at CES in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Blaze is a performance watch that tracks and records activities such as daily steps, calories burned and more. The watch does not include its own app store like other smartwatches on the market, but it does ship with the guided workout app FitStar preinstalled. The watch also lacks GPS, but users can pull GPS data from their smartphone. The Blaze also tracks 15 different types of exercises and activities, such as "running, walking, tennis, basketball, soccer, and elliptical machine workouts," according to The Verge.

Fitbit to kick off CES 2016 with Tuesday morning press conference

CES 2016 officially kicks off for everyone on January 6, but Fitbit will get the ball rolling on Tuesday with an early morning keynote during press day (January 5). The fitness tracking company plans to capitalize on its successful holiday sales by holding the first press conference of the week at 7:30 a.m.. It is unknown exactly what Fitbit plans to announce during the event, but analysts expect new slimmer devices with more capabilities and sensors. It will be interesting to see if Fitbit can continue holding off the Apple Watch and remain the leading fitness device manufacturer. The company's free iOS app recently led Apple App Store downloads in December suggesting it had strong sales throughout the 2015 holidays.

It looks like Santa delivered a lot Fitbit tracking devices this Christmas. The free Fitbit iOS app topped Apple’s app chart on Christmas Day, according to QZ. The sudden explosion in Fitbit app downloads suggests that a lot of people were activating a new fitness tracker on December 25th. The Fitbit app has also been one of the most downloaded health and fitness apps in all of December, according to App Annie. This could spell trouble for Apple who was also pushing their own wearable device this Christmas, but it is impossible to tell since neither Apple or Fitbit have publically reported sales.

Fitbit Announces MobileTrack for iPhone 5s Users

Fitbit announced today at CES that its MobileTrack feature is now available for iPhone 5s owners. The new addition to the free Fitbit iOS app allows iPhone 5s users to their track basic health and fitness activity.

MobileTrack taps into the M7 coprocessor in the iPhone 5s and helps owners keep track of their steps taken, distance traveled, calories burned, plus more. The app also allows users to take advantage of Fitbit's in-app social and motivational features by allowing them to see their personal achievements with easy to use graphs and charts.

“We know there are many ways consumers like to track their fitness and want to enable as many people as possible to get the benefits of Fitbit activity tracking – and now anyone with an iPhone 5s can also download and use the Fitbit app,” said James Park, CEO and Co-Founder of Fitbit.
