Google has rolled out Google Lens support for iOS users. The addition comes as a built-in feature of the existing Google Photos app. Google Lens makes it possible to extract information from photos, such as details from a business card or event flyer, the history of a landmark or building, or reviews of a book or album. Lens can also aid in the identification of plants, animals and famous paintings.

Apple plans to unify its app development process to include iOS apps in the Mac App Store as early as next year. According to a Bloomberg report, this change could breathe much-needed life into the App Store on macOS computers. Apparently developers have been reluctant to distribute their software using the platform.

The popular iOS app Shazam will soon be part of Apple. Apple says it has "exciting plans in store" as it combines with Shazam to deliver new services to Apple Music. Shazam delivers the names and lyrics of songs, TV shows and other content just by listening to audio clips. With Apple's HomePod launch on the horizon, deep Shazam integration would bring even more functionality to the premium in-home speaker.

The iPhone X display notch houses critical components used for Face ID, FaceTime and other features. This hasn't stopped people from loving or hating the design feature. Detractors have referred to the "horns" on the iPhone X, which comprise two halves of the status bar. For those who truly can't stand the notch, there is a solution that doesn't involve buying another phone.

Starting with iOS 7, iPhone and iPad apps have been able to run in the background, refreshing even while not in use (prior to this only location services and music playback would run in the background). This allowed apps to update often instead of only updating when opened, so for example, you could get notifications from apps like Twitter and Facebook Messenger without having to launch them.
