HOWTO: Untethered iOS 4.2.1 iPhone Jailbreak Instructions (Redsn0w)

The long awaited untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 is here, albeit in limited fashion. The instructions below pertain to Redsn0w 0.9.7b1, a beta release of the so-called "backup plan" untethered jailbreak. This release is not the final release and, being a beta, requires a bit more effort than the eventual final release should. This jailbreak is also limited to the iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch 4G.

The following provides step-by-step instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone (or other iOS device) using Redsn0w 0.9.7b1.

How do I change iPhone app icons without jailbreaking?

You can change the home screen icons for third-party (non-Apple) applications on your iPhone without jailbreaking your device. To switch icons to the photo of your choice follow these instructions:

1. Install iPhone Explorer on your computer. The program is free and comes in Windows and Mac versions.

2. Run iPhone Explorer and connect your iPhone to the computer with your USB cable.

Dev-Team Jailbreaks and Unlocks iPhone 4

Dev-Team member planetbeing has demonstrated the first unlocked US-purchased iPhone 4 in the world. With a custom-cut Rogers SIM card and some coding magic, his iPhone dialed Rogers customer service and displayed the Rogers carrier logo on the home screen.

MuscleNerd and planetbeing are working simultaneously on two different unlock solutions, and plan to release the best one when the time is right. Apparently the software needs work even though the end result is functional. Dev-Team may wait until Apple releases iOS 4.1 before making the iPhone 4 unlock public.

Now iPhone Owners Can Run Android OS

iPhone Dev-Team member David Wong (aka planetbeing) has successfully installed the Android operating system on a first-generation iPhone. In fact, when booting the iPhone you can choose between iPhone OS and Android. The frankenphone makes phone calls, receives messages, plays music, and connects to Wi-Fi networks among other things.

The camera doesn't work and it may be a little bit buggy, but the fact that it works is impressive. That is, if you're impressed by that sort of thing. Many users looking to run unauthorized software on their iPhones simply resort to jailbreaking the iPhone OS, not installing an entirely different operating system!

Pwnage for OS X Released, Windows Version Coming Soon

Despite their oh-so-clever April Fools' joke which suggested the DevTeam had been bought out and that Pwnage would not be released, nary a few days later, the iPhone DevTeam has released the OS X version of the highly anticipated one-time jailbreaking, unlocking, and more tool for the Apple iPhone.
