New Apps of the Week

The Pangu jailbreak team and Cydia creator Jay Freeman (saurik) have finally released a stable version of the Pangu iOS 8 jailbreak tool with a fully functioning Cydia app store. Freeman announced on Thursday that Cydia has officially started accepting payments for paid tweaks and apps, and Team Pangu released Pangu version 1.2.0 with major big fixes. As of right now the iOS 8 jailbreak is available for Windows only, but a English Mac version should be available any day now. This means we should see an increase in jailbreak tweaks that take advantage of the iOS 8 software. You can learn how to jailbreak your device running iOS 8 - iOS 8.1 here. On Friday, Blizzard announced its first Hearthstone expansion titled "Goblins vs Gnomes". The expansion will include 120 new cards that players can purchase with in-game gold or real world money. You can see a preview of some of the cards being released here and the trailer at the bottom of this post. Goblins vs Gnomes will be available this December.

It was a busy week for App Store releases, but before we get started let's talk about the Pangu iOS 8 jailbreak. The Chinese team of hackers behind the iOS 7.1 jailbreak this week released an iOS 8.0 - 8.1 jailbreak for developers. The jailbreak does not come bundled with Cydia, but Team Pangu announced today that they are working with Cydia creator @saurik to fix this and other issues plaguing the release. It is unclear when a full English version of the iOS 8 jailbreak will be available, but it should be released way sooner than we expected. This means we will be seeing more jailbreak tweaks in the near future that take advantage of all the new features found in iOS 8.

There were also quite a few new iOS games announced this week. Nimblebit released a teaser trailer for Golfinity, Foursaken Media posted a bunch of screen shots of Heroes and Castles 2 on the Touch Arcade forums and Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf got an official release date: of October 28, 2014. It's 1984 all over again in the App Store, Rovio Entertainment has released its Angry Birds Transformers crossover and Halfbrick Studios has updated Fruit Ninja with a Ghostbusters theme in celebration of the film's 30th anniversary. Both Tiny Tower Vegas and the MMORPG Order & Chaos Online have also been update with bonus Halloween content for those who are getting into the Halloween mood. Here are this week's games, apps and jailbreak tweaks released to the App Store and Cydia for 10/12/14 to 10/18/14. Apple's Free App of the Week is Tower Madness 2. The tower defense game will be free on the Apple App Store until 10/23/14. The game will be free on the Apple App Store until 10/16/14.

There were a lot of big app updates this week as developers caught up with iOS 8. Zynga's Words with Friends not only received a redesign for its fifth birthday, but it is also now called New Words with Friends. The popular word game now features a flatter interface and Solo Mode, which allows users to play alone without an internet connection. Temple Run 2 was updated with NFL players starting with Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson. Temple Run 2 with both Kaepernick and Wilson is now available for free on the App Store. This week also saw a lot of big game announcements including trailers for Marvel Contest of Champions, Kingdom Rush Origins, Tilt to Live: Gauntlet's Revenge and Dead Mage Studio's Epic of Kings. You can watch all of these trailers at the bottom of this post.

One quick PSA, Apple is closing the date loophole in iOS 8.1 that allows users to install emulators like GBA4iOS. You can read more about the problem here.
