How to restore a lost Pokémon GO account

The mobile gaming hit Pokémon GO received an update to version 1.1.0 over the weekend, leading many players to believe their progress has been lost. According to game developer Niantic, this is a login issue that surfaced due to an update to the Google Account login system. Rest assured, your Pokémon GO account still exists and can easily be recovered.

For those who have started from scratch and assumed the worst has happened, it's most likely you have accidentally created a new Pokémon GO account using a different Google account. Follow these steps to bring back your old account, along with all of your game progress:

1. Sign out of your new, empty Pokémon GO account by opening the app and tapping the Pokéball. On the menu navigate to Settings -> Sign out, then tap Yes to confirm.

2. Tap the Google button to sign back into the new account.

3. Repeat step one to sign out again.

4. Once you have signed out the second time, tap the Google button again.

5. This time enter the Google Account username and password you used to create your old Pokémon GO account.

Once you are logged into the old account, all of the progress, Pokémon, items and data will be restored in the game. As often happens with new games, there can be hiccups when an update is released. The latest version, 1.1.1 is already available on iTunes for free.

Pokémon GO requires iOS 8.0 or later and 104 MB of free space to install.

I cannot get old version to load have tried your directions multiple times

I think I just figured it out.. for Iphone. Got to setting-safari-cookies-enable always... then go to your safari app go to gmail and log in manually instead of using the app. after you've logged in try to sign into google in pokemon. this should work ive been at this for about 3weeks now and I finally got my game back today. I think its all about the cookies

This doesn't work for me either. I didn't sign up with a Google account initially and I do not remember it asking me for an email or password. But when I try to log in to a trainer account with the email and password that is my "go to" whenever I create an account it doesn't work. If I enter the "forgot password" and enter in this info it doesn't find it....but it does say my email has been used. Customer service isn't responding either. Very frustrated because I had didn't actual $$ and I want it back. I'm willing to start the game over....

This will only work if the email address you signed up with is still active. My university deleted my account when I graduated. I can no longer access my account. I've lost my rares, pokecoins, and progress for the last 8 months. I don't have the heart to start from scratch...

when I try to log in, the option to enter gmail is not even shown. Its only allows the option to log in with a trainer club account. Ive tried uninstalling and it still does not allow the option to log in with email. Anyone know how to fix this?
