It’s a pity that the backup files of iTunes cannot be read in regular ways, which means if you want to see the content in the backup files, you have to erase the iPhone first and restore from the backup files. Restoring with iTunes may lead to the loss of the data created after the backup. As for iCloud backup, secure factors and limited free storage space should be taken into account. Thus, backing up iPhone with iTunes and iCloud are not the best solutions. Luckily, there are still other ways to backup iPhone even without iTunes and iCloud:

Backup with iTunes is pretty easy, but some files cannot be backed up to iTunes backup on your computer, such as un-purchased songs on your iPhone Music app and some data that were synced from another computer. In this case, you may need some professional tool to backup these content. https://www.imobie.com/support/anytrans.htm

What if you get the "iPhone couldn't restore due to corruption"? That might be because of a difference in the iOS or simple because the previous backup process wasn't fully successful. Then I might recommend you to take a look at the

As for me, I do backup regularly. But I backup iPhone without using iTunes since it can't let me see what I have backed up. I have chosen FonePaw iOS Transfer, which can preview data on computer and selectively backup iPhone, iPad, and iPod.
