Now that Geohot has released the blackra1n RC3 jailbreaking tool, activating tethering on an iPhone 3G or 3GS is a snap. Many international users already have tethering, meaning they can share their iPhone data connection with a computer. AT&T does not offer this option in the US.
Fortunately it's never been simpler to tether if your iPhone is running the latest firmware (3.1.2). Follow these steps to activate tethering, just keep in mind you are breaking all kinds of agreements with AT&T and Apple in the process.
- First go to blackra1n.com to download and run the blackra1n RC3 jailbreak.
- After reboot, your iPhone is jailbroken. Find the blackra1n app installed on your iPhone and run the application.
- Touch “sn0w” and then the Install button in the upper right to install blacksn0w.- Your iPhone is now unlocked. Open the web browser on your iPhone and go to the address: http://m.peacefulinsanity.com/Tether.mobileconfig

- Click install and confirm to update your IPCC file (carrier settings).
- Reboot your iPhone. Go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Internet Tethering -> ON.
- Now your computer or laptop can borrow your iPhone's data connection using USB or Bluetooth.

It didn't work for me either but then again I used pwnage jailbreak rather than blackra1n. is there a way to do it with pwnage.

I have a 3GS 3.1.2 "offically unlocked" ($150!!!!!) by Telstra Australia but they don't provide a tethering provision. While this method is good for AT & T does anyone have the settings for Telstra.
In addition I have a jail broken and unlocked 2G iPhone running 3.1.2 does anyone know if you can support tethering on this type of iphone?
Telstra are blaming Apple for the lack of tethering but it's crazy and stupid comment due to the fact that both Optus and Vodaphone in Australia do accomodate tethering. Why these two and not Telstra?
I intend moving away from Telstra and everyone else should as Telstra are basically holding all it's customers to ramsom and/or treating us as fools!!!!!!!!!!

Been looking to tether for a while, stopped my search and started again today and found this, followed the directions and i was able to install the new network settings and have the option to tether with (3G 3.1.2 7D11) but iphone doesnt show up as a choice under list of networks to choose from. Im using the usb option and it doesnt pick it up. Dont like using blue tooth, but still tried it and it doesnt see my iphone, but it detects that my iphone is plugged in. So whats good? How can i get to detect my iphone as a network? By the way I have AT&T as a carrier, I know that AT&T doesnt allow u to tether, but isnt that the purpose of this blacksnow thing? Thx a mill and appreciate whoever can help me on this.
holla back

Works GREAT!!! This is so AWESOME!!! Everything worked as advertised! Only thing I had to do was run the black rain App twice, and BINGO, everything was smooth sailing. I have a new iphone, 8GB 3G, with the 3.1.2 OS on my iphone, AND IT WORKED!!! Just tested it with my laptop, and sure enough, my laptop was running off my iphone Internet connection, and I was impressed with the speed. Blackra1n, you or you guys are geniuses!

Works great!
I was really upset when I accidentally upgraded to this newest update and lost tethering a while back. Just followed the instructions and it works awesomely on both me and my fiance's Iphone.
The only thing the instructions here doesn't say is that when you click to download Snow, it started loading doing something then I lost my phone signal and it made me think that nothing happened because I never got another Icon. All i did when that happened was reboot again then enter http://m.peacefulinsanity.com/Tether.mobileconfig into the mobile browser. Reboot again and it was all good.
I'm so glad to have this feature back!!

Is sn0w even necessary for tethering? sn0w seems to cause issues for some. What if you don't want unlock, just tethering?
Anonymous replied on Permalink
I did this with only jailbreaking and not unlocking. The peacefulinsanity tethering works fine for me on US AT&T. Granted I just did it so I don't know if AT&T will mess with my bill any.

Yes you can activate your iPhone 3GS 3.1.3 with baseband 5.12.1 from this web : http://wecanunlockiphone.com/ they are the first on net who are providing this solution.

This worked for me, although the web page specified for the mobile config didn't work. However, I had the config from the benm.at site already from my previous failed attempts to get the Tethering option to appear on my Settings->General->Network screen. This time it worked and the tethering option appeared. When I turned it on and connected it to my PC running Windows 7, it loaded the driver and connected automagically. Thanks for the great info.

My windows 7 can't find driver for iPhone as modem. Where did you find it?
