How can use iPhone personal hotspot over USB (Windows)?
The iPhone 3GS can be tethered to a Windows computer using Bluetooth or USB. If your computer doesn't have Bluetooth, then setting up the USB connection is your only option.
To tether the iPhone 3GS or any other model iPhone via USB, you must install Apple iTunes (free download) on the Windows computer first. Without iTunes USB tethering won't work.
Newer model iPhones are capable of making a personal hotspot with a Wi-Fi connection, which does not require that iTunes be installed on the Windows computer.

yes you definately need itunes to be able to use the tether through usb as a networlk adapter is downloaded inthe itunes install packet which makes the connection possible on your phone , on 3gs its the only way usb ect , but you can pair with bluetooth also on 3gs , on phones after the 3gs your probably use wfi to connect anyway but for 3g internet sharing you need to use usb.I always keep an itunes 10.6 on a flash usb incase i needto instal a tther on someones pc when im out or at frinds as not evryone has wi fi . check out all the helpful articles on tethering http://dillysano-mymakemoneydiary.blogspot.com/2012/09/sonybravia-and-iphone-compatibility.html

My iPhone has suddenly stopped displaying the Personal Hotspot icon under settings, the place where I usually accessed it from. I can not get a hotspot wirelessly, through Bluetooth or when teathered. All of these methods have previously all worked without an issue. As per another site I tried reset network settings and aside from losing all my prefered wireless networks there was no change. Any assistance would be most appreciated. I run a small home based business and having no Internet access to my computers is proving very problematic! Also my phone is nearly three years old and as such is off Warrenty so unless I pay Apple big bucks they advise that they can not help me. Thanks!

you may need to do a hard reset , by holding the power button down and the home button until the screen turns off and resets it should work fine then, if still not you may need to factory reset which will lose all data and youll need to reactivate your iphone by connecting again to itunes , this can sometimes say messages after reset like it wont recognize your sim , before factory reset have a spare sim thats the same network the phone was originally on which is normally tmobile a contract sim will always work , activate the pphone using itunes with that sim once synced and activated put your sim back in and it will recognise it . hopes this helps .
