What do the iPhone 5 model numbers mean (A1428 / A1429)?

In deciding to go with blazing fast LTE capability in the iPhone 5, Apple was forced to release three different devices to meet compatibility with different LTE network standards worldwide.

The A1428 model iPhone 5 is the Canadian and US AT&T network GSM iPhone, including broad support for UMTS/HSPA+DC-HSDPA (frequencies 850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz), GSM/EDGE (frequencies 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), and LTE bands 4 and 17.

The A1429 iPhone comes in two different flavors, one CDMA and one GSM. The GSM model is designed to support LTE in Asia (including Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea). This GSM iPhone will also work on LTE in Australia, Germany, and the UK on bands 1, 3, and 5.

The CDMA version of model A1429 works on Sprint's and Verizon's LTE networks in the US, along with the KDDI network in Japan on bands 1, 3, 5, 13, and 25. The CDMA version also supports GSM bands, making the CDMA iPhone 5 compatible with GSM networks. However, the CDMA A1429 will not support LTE on GSM networks in the US.

Hi, thank you for your information.
Basically I thought about buying an Iphone5 online from the Hong Kong website (no contract so cheaper) to use in the US where I stay for a year BUT I'll go back to France (my native country) in July 2013.
So, will it be possible to use the Iphone5 (The A1429 GSM model from Hong Kong) in the US ? If yes, do I need to buy a plan from at&t, Verizon or Sprint (to have LTE)?
Other question, when I'll be back in France, will it be possible to use my Hong Kong Iphone5 ?

This prices are questionable.

you should mention the part number including 3 digits like 239 LL/A . just LL/A is not enough.
With this price I assume your devices must be locked originally; then you changed unlocked them.

Sorry, your info doesn't seam to be correct. According to the apple website at

the CDMA model 1429 works on the same networks as the GSM model, plus Verizon and Sprint in the States. Here is another good read:

You're also emphasize the advantage to model the A1429 CDMA because it supports all the networks - GSM / UMTS and a wide variety of LTE networks.
Does it supports on LTE band 1800 ???
It's a little strange to me because I know that CDMA phones are built without a Sim card and the number etched on the device...Is the model A1429 CDMA includes the option of sim insert - so I can go through the various mobile operators?
I'd love to get your answer.

Yes, the GSM (NOT CDMA) iPhone gives you the ability to change network operators as you wish because you can insert SIM card in it.
