Browsing the web or sending text messages while on a phone call has been a feature of GSM networks like AT&T's for some time. Now thanks to the rollout of Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Verizon customers can get into the game. Later this year, the company plans to begin offering the service for compatible devices.
The next iPhone is expected to launch with iOS 8, which will include VoLTE capabilities. Verizon has been implementing the network upgrade nationwide, which will also bring improved HD Voice quality to compatible devices. The iPhone 5 and 5s are both designed to take advantage of HD Voice, and other carriers are working on deploying the technology.
Use of the VoLTE network comes with the same caveats and HD Voice, which requires the handsets on both ends of the call to be VoLTE compatible. Of course, both parties on the call must also be located in areas with VoLTE service.
Verizon will join T-Mobile and AT&T, carriers who have already begun to deploy wideband audio technology. Verizon also touted new features that could improve FaceTime on the iPhone:
As part of the VoLTE video calling experience, customers have the ability to change their calls instantly from voice-only to voice and video. The rollout also sets the stage for future enhancements through Rich Communications Services (RCS), which enable things like including large file transfer, more robust group messaging, and more location sharing.
