Apple Weekly News Roundup: First Apple Watch iOS update released, 15" MacBook Pro launches and more

Apple's largest retail store will open in Dubai this summer.

Apple released the first software update for its watch last Tuesday. Apple Watch OS 1.0.1, aside from bug fixes, contains improvements to Siri, accessibility, third party apps and some health and fitness features. The improvements should result in more accurate pace and distance data as well as calories burned data for fitness activities.

As is usually the case with software updates, users noticed bugs shortly after the release. Some Apple Watch owners reported that, after updating to 1.0.1, the heart rate monitor stopped taking measurements at regular intervals, either taking them sporadically or, in some cases, not taking them at all.

Apple also began stocking limited quantities of Apple Watch Sport bands at its stores, though it still doesn't sell the watch itself at any of its brick-and-mortar locations. The fluoroelastomer Sports band will be available for watch purchasers who want to swap bands, and for those who want extra bands. It is available in five different colors for $49.99.

Apple reportedly wants to add live local broadcasts to its web based subscription TV service it plans to launch, which would distinguish it from rivals like Sling. Many pundits expect the service to debut with the new Apple TV sometime in the fall, but this could significantly delay the subscription service's debut as negotiations become much more complicated by involving local affiliates and franchise owners.

Despite reports that Apple has largely abandoned its plan to develop an ultra high definition TV set, activist investor Carl Icahn still believes the company will come to market with 55" and 65" sets in 2016 and will generate revenues of $15 billion in sales. Owning almost 4 million Apple shares, he likely has some basis for his speculation. He also believes Apple will have an electric car on the market by 2020.

On Tuesday Apple launched its new 15" MacBook Pro. While it didn't receive an new processor, it did get upgraded PCIe-based flash storage which Apple says is 2.5 times faster than any previous machine's. It also received a Force Touch trackpad.

Apple also released a new lightning dock for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus on Tuesday. It should be compatible with most cases and will retail for $39.

Apple's largest retail outlet in the world and first in the Middle East is set to open this summer in Dubai. The 50,000 square foot space is slated to open in the Mall of the Emirates in August.
