How to fix Gmail incorrect password/user name error on iPhone?
Sometimes the iPhone mail app will intermittently stop getting Gmail and the dialog box below will appear. The message "The user name or password for imap.gmail.com is incorrect" can show up even if you have made no changes to your Gmail account settings on the iPhone.
Here are instructions on how to fix this problem should it occur on your device:
1. Quit all mail clients that are accessing the affected Gmail account. This means the Mail app on the iPhone and any other place you are accessing your Gmail from such as a computer.
2. Open Safari on the affected iPhone and navigate to this page: http://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha3. Enter your full Gmail address, password and type the characters you see in the picture. Touch the unlock button to verify your account.

4. Open the Mail app and your Gmail access should be restored.

I had an issue on my laptop / Thunderbird and I tried the captcha url and it seemed to clear it up.
Didn't touch 2 step verification.

It solved by creating App-Password
it happened because of my 2-step security settings and for iPhone Mail I should create an App-Password

The above solution does not work. Just FYI

If the above instruction did not work try this. In your device browser go to this page.
https://security.google.com/settings/security/apppasswords
Select the app from the list Ex: Calender, Mail , contacts or even name your app in other field. then select your device from the next list Ex; iphone, ipad, Windows phone etc.
Click Generate button. This will generate a password for you.
Copy and paste this password on your app login page which was giving you password error.
This will fix your wrong password issue.
I hope this helps.
Thanks.

This morning i could access my gmail on the iphone6 now I get the error message above. I have tried going to the link you posted but it wont finish loading. (everything else is working fine). In my settings for mail it is asking me to re-enter the password but when I click on that nothing happens. I have been trying this for hours so I don't think that their site is down.
Any Ideas?

I have gone through this process several times with the password that works in my browser on my pc, ipad & iphone and I still get an email address mismatch. The email address is correct.

It's very effortless to find out any matter on net
as compared to textbooks, as I found this article at this web site.

If these instructions don't immediately work for you, just delete your gmail account from your iPhone and then reinstall. It should work fine, it's what I had to do.

This happens every week on my iphone 6S+. It will sometimes correct itself after I go through the captcha stuff and then sometimes it fails without reason. Also not really sure which gmail account it is having problems with... I have two.

My mail.app stalls with this error every few days to a week or so.
What I have found is that if I send myself an email via the mail.app to my icloud account, it is sent and is then collected on the mail.app - magically, the gmail account is unblocked and mail functions normally until the next blockage.
Rinse, repeat, until Apple sort out this issue. It is a mail.app issue, not a gmail issue. If it were a gmail issue I would get the same problem on my desktop; I don't.

No, this didn't work. I can delete the account and then install again and everything will work good for a few days, then I get the message that "Cannot Get Mail" from server imap.gmail.com

I also deleted the (gmail) account on iPhone then added new account. It worked.
