How can I add a custom label to iPhone contact numbers?
The iPhone Contacts app provides several labels for numbers, such as main, mobile and work to identify different lines. What if you need to add a label not included in the list, to identify multiple mobile lines or a land line for a contact?
You can add a custom label to any number by tapping the Edit button while viewing the contact. Touch the label to the left of the phone number. Scroll down to the bottom of the list of labels, and tap Add Custom Label. Enter the custom label text and touch Save.
Your custom label is now added to the list of contact number labels, and can be selected to label any phone number.

This doesn't appear to be the case any more. There is no 'Add Custom Label' option.
Shame.

Make sure your default contacts account in settings/contacts is apple based not something like Outlook

I have never had a problem with any of my iPhone models or software versions. I just touch and hold "label" for a moment and the list of the standard label choices is there. At the end of that box, a new box begins with "Add Custom Label" at the top of the list. You can make any label you want and scroll through the old labels and use them again.
There is one huge problem I have encountered though: the custom labels are not alphabetized, you can make any label you want and scroll through the old labels and use them again.
There is one huge problem I have encountered though: the custom labels are not alphabetized. So if you have a long list of custom labels and lyou want to use one you created previously, have fun scrolling through them to find it. Additionally, if you delete any of your custom labels, they will be deleted wherever you used them. This is a real problem if you are getting a huge list of custom labels. Additionally, if you delete any of your custom labels, they will be deleted wherever you used them. This search , create, and don't delete dilemma is an irritant as your list of custom labels grows. I rarely use my computer to change things through the cloud. Perhaps I can alphabetize there. But I'm still faced with the dilemma of deleting multiples because wherever I used one it will be changed to "other" I rarely use my computer to change things through the cloud. Perhaps I can alphabetize there. But I'm still faced with the dilemma of deleting multiples because i suspect that deleting an extra label, it will be changed to "other" wherever I used it originally. E.g. I have several "Billing" labels created when I didn't feel like scrolling through the 150 others. Each time I delete one it will be deleted wherever I used that particular one before.
So bust my buttons!

I have been using contacts custom labels a long long time. In ios6 i think was the last time they were working correctly. EVERY update Apple issue, my custom labels is the VERY FIRST place i go to see if the update has fixed the custom labels. Custom labels are still there. you can still use them. BUT BUT BUT since ios 7(ithink) they have been all mixed up. Why would they do that, i have no idea. Before it was easy to reuse a custom label. NOW, NO. custom labels are no longer in alphabetical order. This is Steves classic design not working well. It was so useful before but all jumbled up labels means it hard to reuse the label "HQ" because it takes ages to find it. Now its easier just to create yet another "HQ" label. I use the Apple contacts and the Apple calendar and Apple e-mail. All work with the custom labels. Some of my work friends use outlook and other oddities and the custom labels are NOT available to them. I can not comment for those not using Apple all through as i am. Like i said. EVERY update launched... this is the very first check i make on the update, to rate the update. i am disappointed every time. the last update was to ios9. still not working in alphabetical order as before, so so long ago now. Have sent feedback requests to make it alphabetical again numerous times. Its an unimportant detail i feel. so why is it there? i would have thought ALL details are important and cant think why it is so so so hard to put right. small details can make such a difference cant they?
PS did you know that i took nearly 3 or 4 versions to make music videos play in landscape mode?
incredible huh? Today the folder navigation on the mac cmd+up/down arrow (alt+cmd+up/down arrow) to navigate through folder hierarchies will not work if you do not remove the window side bar(alt+cmd+T)? iPhone5 was the last time you could get an iPhone reasonably comfortably in your Levis pocket. Entropy and Apple seem to be going hand in hand. i HATE to believe it but i think it might be true. Good things can´t last forever. or can they?

i am on ios9 now and i do still have the option to CREATE custom labels in my contacts. and CHOOSE old custom labels (iPhone ONLY).
They have always been there but as from ios6 they got all mixed up.
iPhone>Open a contact>Edit the contact>click on a label and select ADD CUSTOM LABEL.
you could reuse these custom labels like TheBoss but now they have no alphabetical order any more its much less friendly.
YEARS have gone bye with this SAME PROBLEM.
Search the Apple support community for.... Custom labels in Contacts all mixed up?

Solution 1: Go to Settings > Contacts > Accounts > go to each account and switch off the Contact syncing. In my case I had my work email synced with my contacts. I turned it off, got out of settings and tried to add a new contact into Contacts app and I was able to see all the custom labels on phone types and related names. I went back to Settings > Contacts > Accounts and switched on my Contacts syncing and it is still working. Looks like it had triggered something and it started to work.
Solution 2: Go to Contacts > Groups (left top corner). In my case, I had to uncheck my work email and it solved my issue too. I had checked it back on and still works.
Please let me know if it had fixed your issue, hope it did.

not in iOS 6.1.3 either there used to be because i have done it in the pass but now i can tfind the option

It seems that if you imported the contacts from ios5, those contact give you "Add Custom Label". That is the only thing I can guess...
In my contacts for some of them I get "Add Custom Label" and it works.
For new phone numbers added, no way....
I saw somewhere else that if you downloaded magic jack talk app, that allowed you to edit labels.

In ios7, there's an "add custom label", but when you click it and type the label you want, there's no way to save it. I've tried everything. All my previous custom labels are there, and if I choose one of those, it works, but when I type a new one, it just disappears. Is this just one more ios7 glitch?
Maureen replied on Permalink
I don't seem to have the option to add a custom label to any new contacts I am creating. However, I have found if I open up and old existing contact. This option is available
Anonymous replied on Permalink
this is happening to me too. I hit "hide contacts" on accident the other day and everything disappeared, I went through icloud to get my contacts back, but now not all are back. When I add new contacts there is no custom label, for old ones custom labels are still there. In addition when I text message people I select the contact name and text them, but when they text me back their contact info is all deleted! It just shows their phone number like I don't know them.

I also had the custom label option when I got my iPhone 3 months ago. I was able to set up most of my contacts with the option. Then I received a few software updates and ever since my label options are very limited. So limited the choices are rediculous!! Apple needs to fix this and send out a new update to make the custom label option available again.

For Outlook Contacts, I cannot add/set custom phone number label.
However, for personal contacts (on phone only contacts) I can set custom phone number labels.

this is happening to me too, i got my iPhone 5c about 1 week ago and could input an 'iPhone' label and now i can't do this, this is messing with the fact that i now can not iMessage people!
anyone know how to change this at all?

Glad to hear I'm not going out of my mind and others have the same problem. I thought I had found a solution by taking a phone number from 'recent'. I found that the alternative labels came up. But when I saved it, the label reverted to one on the standard list. Infuriating!!!
Anonymous replied on Permalink
I'm guessing that no one has found the answer to this issue yet? I can't believe they would remove this from the options. Another fine Apple F'Up!
Endomaster replied on Permalink
I had hoped that iOS 7.1 would have resolved the problem of custom labels. Alas it has not. Are we ever going to get our custom labels back? Shame on you, Apple!
Anonymous replied on Permalink
I have no problem adding custom label but they are not sorted so it is very difficutl to know whether you already have it or not.
Endomaster replied on Permalink
Perhaps 'Anonymous' doesn't have iOS 7?
J#FF0 replied on Permalink
I agree. No custom labels available in IOS 7.1. Shame Apple shame. Please fix it.

Guys, it's not a matter of iOS 7. You have selected as default account for Contacts another one than iCloud.
Go Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calentars, scroll to Contacts set of options and choose iCloud as Default Account.
The only problem is that this is not valid for contacts you already created in previous account but only for the new ones. Unless you delete your current contacts and create them again.
Anonymous replied on Permalink
Nope. I have iCloud as my default - no custom labels - very annoying
Anonymous replied on Permalink
This worked for me I just had to recreate the contact after changing the setting, it just didn't work when I tried after editing the existing contact.
