How do I reclaim iPhone storage space taken up by 'Other'?

How do I reclaim iPhone storage space taken up by 'Other'?

We've been getting numerous reports of users, who have attempted to sync their iPhones after the latest iTunes updates (7.4.x), finding that iTunes shows space on their iPhone occupied by something specified only as 'Other'. Often, this space may be only small amounts (a few megabytes), but we have received reports of 'Other' taking up as much as 4 gigabytes.

Unfortunately, scouring available information sources and speaking with Apple hasn't led to any type of easy resolution.

If you're experiencing this issue under any version of iTunes, you'll need to restore your iPhone to reclaim the space occupied by Other. That is the only known solution at this time.

If you've found another solution to the 'Other' issue, please let us know.

Presumably this issue will be rectified by the next iTunes update.

UPDATE: User Andrew S. said he deleted "a substantial number of text threads containing pictures and videos" to clean out half of the "Other" storage on his phone. Andrew claims he went from having zero free space to 1.88GB by using this technique.

Recent iphone 3Gs and just downloaded iphone and itunes updates and ended up with over 13gb in other storage...simple solution was to hit the restore and backup....didn't lose a thing...except the 13gb of other !!

I In fact, I think it also includes itunes purchased songs that did not initially have album art. Once I added the art they somehow became unrecognizable by itunes as an itunes song and now have been moved to "other". The really bad part is I can not find the music, though purchased from itunes, in the ipod on my iphone. I've checked several songs were I added art work and they are all missing.

I was able to delete this content using iPhone Explorer (for Windows and Mac) available at http://www.iphone-explorer.com/

Solved my GBs of Other problem...

I had this problem before and the delete itunes_control worked for me once.

I just found that all in sudden I lost 3GB of space on my iPhone and I have been doing what I have done before, none worked.

Turned out I have iFile installed on iPhone so that I can check the folder size for much much easier troubleshooting. and the winner is Rock App, which ridiculously created a log file that's 3GB. I even didnt run it !

Anyway, the 3GB space restored immediately right after I deleted the file.

ssh into your iphone, go to the root, and type

find . -size +15M

THat will find all files on your iphone that's over 15 meg in size.

I found a 10+ gig log file from Rock. Hope this helps.

Thanks, My rockapp Log file was 8.92GB! Delete, reboot. Working fine again. Had me scared. I think something weird is going on today with this log file, it grows and grows until you delete it. Good luck everyone.

Thank you so much! It seems this log from Rock app was the problem in my case too. Thank you!!

How did you fix this problem? I have over 8G tied up in other and dont know how to get rid of it. IF you figured out how to solve this problem could you please share the solution?
Thank you

Can someone please note the location of the rockapp log file? I have the same problem but can't find the file. Thanks!!

I lost 20gb today; is it Rock? I can't even run Cydia anymore. I deleted my private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Music and now of course all my music is gone, but itunes/iphonebrowser won't even see my phone anymore.

am I doomed? have to restore again? help pls

For anyone who tried all that has been said here, and their OTHER was still gaining size, just go and delete the folowing file:
var/mobile/Library/RYP/logs/rockapp_****-**-**.log

That was easy. Just saved me 11GB!

Question one: HOW do I extract this file? Where and how to access to directory?

var/mobile/Library/RYP/logs/rockapp_****-**-**.log

What application of program to use to access to file with extantion log

It is *definitely* caused by Rock in my case. I found a 14Gb log file :-(

Delete it, reboot the phone, reapply blackra1n and you're done.

Have your iPhone sync with iTunes, the music should sync again, it worked for me.

but of coz be sure u recover the space u lost before doing that.

if u r using an app such as ifile(what i use) i believe it is the easiest way to find and delete said file or any files on that matter.. . but yeah what u wanna get rid of is located: var/mobile/Library/RYP/logs
100 thanks or should i said 10 gigs back thanks to whoever first discovered this evil ever expanding file!

/var/mobile/Library/RYP/logs is the directory where you'll find the huge log file.

This was the solution that worked for me!!!!!!! Many thanks!!

Afterwards, I downloaded Cydelete from Cydia.........it allows you to delete cydia installed apps.

From here I got rid of Rock and Icy

there is no ryp firectory there..:(:(..plzz help....

do we nned it

IF you have Rock.app on your jailbroken iphone, i HIGHLY reccomend you go to
/var/mobile/Library/RYP/logs

I found a log file over 6gb, cleared my "other-catogory" problem.

For anyone who tried all that has been said here, and their OTHER was still gaining size, just go and delete the folowing file:
var/mobile/Library/RYP/logs/rockapp_****-**-**.log

Thank you so much!!! This was kicking my butt last night!!

How do I delete the file?

Your are the man!!!!

Damn and I thought I had to many apps installed. Time to reinstall deleted apps.

Thank you!

Great Find! F***^#HD Rock Log!

How can I delete the following file - var/mobile/Library/RYP/logs/rockapp_****-**-**.log ?

I have a jailbroken iPhone 3G running 3.1.2 firmware

I had 4.7GB of OTHER showing in iTunes. I deleted all the music from the media library using SSH. That didn't work.

I unselected all the music & videos in my iTunes. That didn't work.

Then I went into Cydia deleted Rock. Rebooted my iPhone for good measure - Success! :)

Now I have 785mb of OTHER in iTunes.

I just deleted rock all together. I regained over 20 g of space. Nothing else worked

I found that the other on my iphone was voice memos. Even though I had deleted them they came right on back. There were even some things that were not voice memos in there. Deleted them all and I had my 1.8 gig back. Hope this helps.

Ok basically all i did was get this software called iphone explorer which is free and it lets you look into your iphone and delete things you dont need. Apparently i had a lot of .mov files i didnt know existed, so i deleted those and it gave me the 2.65 GB space back

Good luck if you try this
