How can I turn off the home screen preview of SMS/text messages?
You may not want to see the little preview of text messages that turn up on your home screen when a new text (SMS) message comes in. To turn this off, head to your iPhone settings and go to:
iOS 7/8 UPDATE: Turn off text message, SMS and iMessage previews in alerts, banners and Notification Center with the following setting:
Settings -> Notifications -> Messages -> Show Previews -> OFF (gray switch, NOT green)
Turning off 'Show Previews' will disable the text message preview on your iPhone. You can also use this screen to set other parameters for alerts, including Alert Style.

This is incorrect. I still see previews of text messages regardless of whether the "Show SMS Preview" is on or off. I can't stand this function. Can someone please help me fix this issue? thanks!

You have to enable Password Lock.

yeah, but that only disables it when phone is locked...if the phone is in use it will still display message preview regardless if you have password lock with SMS priview off selected

I think most everyone has missed the intention. Based on the technical experience level we have knowledge of.
The reply's can be confusing and not as straightforward as the reply intended.
As a result, the very first reply back in 2008 provided the correct answer. But you would have to have an above average knowledge of the operation of the iphone device to determine how to disable the banner, alert window, sender ID and preview.
The original question was; How can I turn off the home screen preview of SMS/text messages?.
I think the intent was to turn off the banner or alert window displayed when a message arrives.
If preview is on, the sender's ID and a few lines of the message is displayed in the banner or alert window when the message arrives.
If preview is turned off. The senders ID, (name or number), is displayed in the banner or alert window. Rather than a few lines of text.
To disable the banner or alert window on the home screen when the phone is locked or unlocked. Set the "Alert Style" to none.
This disables the banner or alert window when a message is received. You will see the message count increment on the message icon as messages are received. As well here a tone if "Text Tone" is set to a tone.
To turn off the tone when a message is received. Set "Text Tone to none. (Like when you're in a theater or a meeting).
Depending on the ios of the device and model. Depends where the banner or alert window settings are.
In ios6, Settings>Notification Center>Messages, gets you to this location. Here you can set what is displayed or rather what isn't displayed on the home screen or locked screen.
Note: You leave "Notification Center" "on", even on the iph5.
Hope this helps!

Thank you for your clear concise post. The iPhone 5 banner with message preview is a nightmare and the solution is not easy to navigate. Problem solved!

thank you for your response! i love my iphone but apple really needs to simplify some of its setting features, sometimes i feel dumb trying to figure this phone out because i constantly have to be checking online forums for small little things like this.

This fixed my problem!! Thank you for sharing!!

Follow the previous steps but you must scroll down to "View in Lock Screen" and change this to "Off".
Worked for me!

Yesterday, while I was at work, my sister stole my apple ipad and tested to see if it
can survive a 25 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube
sensation. My apple ipad is now destroyed and she has
83 views. I know this is completely off topic but I had to share
it with someone!
