Apple has released the App Store Best of 2012 list, which includes this year's Editor's Picks for best app and game, and the most downloaded free and paid apps of the year. The Editor's pick for App of the Year is Action Movie FX, with the $0.99 music app Figure nabbing the runner-up slot, and Rayman Jungle Run was voted the best Game of the Year.

Rovio Entertainment once again topped the paid charts with Angry Birds Space, and YouTube was the most downloaded free app (I wonder why?). Paper was announced as the iPad App of the Year, and The Room was chosen as the iPad Game of the Year by Apple. Read on for the complete App Store Best of 2012 results.

Google has finally released a new Maps app for the iPhone after the Apple Maps fiasco.

iPhone users have been clamoring for the return of Google Maps since the release of the iPhone 5 and iOS 6, when Apple replaced the app with its own mapping software. Apple Maps has been widely ridiculed for giving inaccurate information, and has even become the butt of many jokes after Australian police claimed it was dangerous.

The new Google Maps features turn-by-turn navigation and the popular Street View and transit direction options missing from Apple Maps. David Pogue of The New York Times writes: "The brand-new, completely rethought design is slick, simple and coherent. Google admits that it’s even better than Google Maps for Android phones, which has accommodated its evolving feature set mainly by piling on menus."

The jailbreak community anticipated the greatest Rick Roll in internet history, but they got a dodgy jailbreak video instead. An unknown hacker calling himself "Dream JB," promised the world he would deliver an untethered iOS 6 jailbreak for all current iOS devices on December 22. The jailbreak community instantly smelled scam since he is not associated with any known dev team, and has chosen to remain anonymous. To prove he's legit, Dream JB promised video proof today that his jailbreak does work. After a long day of hilarious tweets calling him a fake, Dream JB delivered the first of two videos showing off his mysterious Dream Jailbreak.

There are already hundreds of YouTube comments questioning the authenticity of the video, and the well known iOS hacker chpwn already called it a fake on Twitter:

I thought Extinction Squad from Adult Swim would get boring fast, but I found it fun and challenging enough to hold my attention for quite some time. I don't know if I would drop $0.99 on it, but luckily for everyone it's free this week.

Extinction Squad is a very simple game, you must use your two scientist and a trampoline to bounce falling endangered animals into your truck. There is an Adventure mode, where you can unlock and travel to different locations such as Africa and Australia, and a Countdown mode, where you try to save as many animals as you can before time runs out.

Manually adjusting the brightness of your iPhone screen can be inconvenient. Even on a jailbroken device with SBSettings, it takes a few steps to kick the brightness up or down with an on-screen slider. Now thanks to the Cydia tweak BrightVol, the side volume buttons can easily be used to adjust display brightness on the iPhone.

What makes this tweak so useful is that it won't interfere with normal operation of the volume buttons when needed. BrightVol is configured by default to use an Activator gesture to switch the volume buttons over to brightness. Just press both the up and down volume buttons at the same time, then you can adjust the brightness up or down.
