How to fix Gmail incorrect password/user name error on iPhone?
Sometimes the iPhone mail app will intermittently stop getting Gmail and the dialog box below will appear. The message "The user name or password for imap.gmail.com is incorrect" can show up even if you have made no changes to your Gmail account settings on the iPhone.
Here are instructions on how to fix this problem should it occur on your device:
1. Quit all mail clients that are accessing the affected Gmail account. This means the Mail app on the iPhone and any other place you are accessing your Gmail from such as a computer.
2. Open Safari on the affected iPhone and navigate to this page: http://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha3. Enter your full Gmail address, password and type the characters you see in the picture. Touch the unlock button to verify your account.

4. Open the Mail app and your Gmail access should be restored.

I followed your instructions and when I got to the unlock capture page but is only asked for my email and password. Then after submitting it went to a page with a verification link to click. I clicked it and it said my account had bee verified and that the verification only lasts ten minutes. I tried to set up my gmail again and got the same message, the imap thing you have above. What am I doing wrong?

I had the exact same problem. Recently I put extra protection on my G-mail account by putting a "2-step verification process" on my email account. This will keep you from checking your G-mail on your phone. I went (on a computer) and logged on and took that off I instantly was able to access my emails on my phone. I didn't have to put a password in or anything. I just clicked onto the app once I did it and all my emails were there :)

This link brought me to a list of apps I've approved to use my gmail account (after logging in). And each app allows me to revoke access. But I don't know which of these is supposed to be the Apple email app. Do you know what it's called?

That's not the part you need -- if you scroll down on that page, you have to generate a password for your iOS device. It will give you a 16-character password that circumvents the verification PIN step, which you enter in your gmail account settings on your phone. Tried it and it just worked for me.

This is the fix, I've had to do it on every iOS device I've had - but I always forget when I try to use a new one!

worked like a charm - this is the key (if you don't see an option with a 16 digit password then try again.

Finally--a fix for the gmail password error code on my iPhone! Your link to generate application-specific access codes to by-pass the 2-step verification process worked perfectly and quickly!
Thank you for the advice.
